Managing Director

Founded in 1892, Maison Mähler-Besse has always excelled in the art of combining tradition with modernity. Our cellar, hailed by specialists as one of the world’s finest collections of Grand Cru Classé wines, is packed with treasures dating back as far as 1868. These have been stored in absolutely perfect conditions since their original purchase. They are all regularly monitored and, where necessary, recorked in collaboration with the Château of origin.

We have followed the evolution of the wine market intently, expanding our range of prestigious Bordeaux estates with their second and third offerings. We have also enriched our catalogue with some of the world’s greatest wines (from Italy, Spain, Chile and the USA). We are proud to count ourselves among the handful of négociants who still own winemaking estates in the finest appellations, including Saint-Emilion and, over in the Médoc, Saint-Estèphe.

Our dynamic team, based in France and elsewhere, is a tireless source of expertise and advice for our international partners, working to ensure that these great wines are sold and delivered in the best possible conditions, all over the world.

Mähler-Besse

Introduction

Since the beginning, Mähler-Besse, a family-run wine merchant business founded in 1892 by Frédérik Mähler, has never stopped cultivating excellence and authenticity. Tucked into the historic Chartrons neighbourhood, the birthplace of the Bordeaux wine trade, it is recognized throughout the world as a specialist in Crus Classés and old vintages.

Owner of several estates, such as the Château Cheval Noir Saint-Émilion Grand Cru, this company is also set apart for its savoir faire of import and distribution of great wines of the world. Discovery and travel have always been pillars of the Mähler-Besse philosophy, so much so that the company distributes certain great Californian, Italian, and Chilean wines. The Mähler-Besse range also includes spirits, whose creation is linked with this tradition of international commercial relationships.

Properties

Since 1989, Mähler-Besse has been devising a new strategy based on creating centers of quality in the main Bordeaux appellations. In this way, its viticultural activity is increased by acquiring properties. Thanks to the mastery of the terroir and the vines, and the work invested in the cellar, Mähler-Besse vineyards are ready to provide amateurs and professionals a personalized range of high-quality wines.

Exclusives

Vineyard owner since 1937, Mähler-Besse decided to extend its range to all of Bordeaux’s Protected Designations of Origin (PDO). In order to reach that objective, we conduct a rigorous and pertinent selection of independent Bordeaux winegrowers, relying on the wine-making and wine-growing expertise of our team.

Grands Crus Classés

With each new vintage, Mähler-Besse selects a large range of Bordeaux Grands Crus en primeur, ranging from the most prestigious to those with great potential. Thus Mähler-Besse continues to cultivate their occupation as vintner with rigor and passion by allowing all their vintages to age many years in their cellars after being bottled. Today, the company holds a strong position on over 100 great names of Bordeaux.

International Wines

The Mähler-Besse selection is not only from Bordeaux, but also includes great international wines. The company proposes some great wines from California, Italy, or Chile, such as Opus One, Masseto, and Almaviva. Mähler-Besse also works in partnership with certain properties such as Jackson Family Wines.
